During my internship at the Tampa Bay Times, I created interactive maps that show the concentration of local campaign contributions for the four candidates who have raised more than $1,000 in St. Petersburg’s District 7 city council race.
These maps were crucial for the reporting of a local city council race in St. Petersburg, Florida. When the addresses are plotted state- and nation-wide, we could see that multiple Will Newton contributions come from Tallahassee, the state capital. This means that the state-level government was interested in a local, somewhat small election. On the other hand, Lisa Wheeler-Brown was shown as the candidate with the most truly local support.
It was also exciting to be a part of the print product. Using CartoDB heatmaps with the campaign information, I created these renderings for readers the newspapers, with a link to look at individual contributors online (you can click on the points and see exactly who is funding whom).
